What is WCPT?

Posted on Updated on

Founded in 1951, the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) is the sole international voice for physical therapy, representing more than 300,000 physical therapists worldwide through its 101 member organisations. The confederation operates as a non-profit organisation and is registered as a charity in the UK.

WCPT believes that every individual is entitled to the highest possible standard of culturally appropriate healthcare delivered in an atmosphere of trust and respect for human dignity, and underpinned by sound clinical reasoning and scientific evidence. It is committed to furthering the physical therapy profession and improving global health through:

  • encouraging high standards of physical therapy research, education and practice
  • supporting the exchange of information between WCPT regions and member organisations
  • collaborating with national and international organisations

Do you know that such organization exist ? Do you know what do they do?

Well, I do know of WCPT and have a vague idea of what they stand for. We have heard the abbreviation being used regularly during SPA monthly meetings and even know that we are bidding to host 2015 WCPT Congress. Curiosity led me to venture into their official website to make sense out of all these commotion.

And boy, what did I sign up for ! They gave plenty of very concise explanation and expectation of different aspect Physiotherapy. (or Physical Therapy as what Americans would call it) Its more than just Neuroscience, MS or CP etc, but different arena of Physiotherapy like policies, disability issues and latest happenings. They are found under various tabs at the side of their website. In Singapore we are fighting for recognition and a degree course, while other countries are discussing about other issues, which are also as relevant and important. As students who eventually will be working professional PTs, I think we should have more awareness and be updated regularly (:

So I have signed up for WCPT e-updates to keep myself informed. You can do likewise too (:
