Just a couple of weeks back, in the middle of September, Gino from Sports Solutions volunteered his time to teach some of our students more about Kinesio Taping.
The event was a success and I’m sure that many of us went home with more knowledge about the subject matter. Look at the happy faces below 8D
As students, such education talks will definitely help out in our quest for knowledge. However, they are hard to swallow as most of these talks are expensive to attend. The student council has worked hard over the past year in helping the students obtain more learning opportunities, e.g. footwear and gait analysis talk by ASICS, inservice presentation by Fauzan, etc, at a price of nil. These are just a few talks that can aid our learning. If one wishes to take a bigger step, one has to attend the more advanced education talks planned by our parent association, Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA)!
SPA organizes monthly education talks and sends information about them to its members. Most talks cost $8 for student members to attend. Adult members are required to pay $15 while all non-members usually have to pay $30. This information might not be known by many of the current students, who are non-members, and hence, I’m bringing this up.
Apart from cheaper education talks, joining SPA definitely has its perks. Whenever there are opportunities, SPA tries to take care of its student members by giving them access to free workshops to broaden their knowledge, e.g. some of the student members had a free introductory Pilates workshop conducted by a reknowned Pilates clinic, iPilates, back in June this year. As I am writing this, we are also in the midst of planning an introductory golf workshop, which will teach our student members more about golf and its related injuries. Interesting? Definitely.
So what’s in it for the student members in 2013? We’re inviting speakers from SPA’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to speak to you about the advancements in the different fields of physiotherapy. In case some of you might not know, there are currently many SIGs under SPA, e.g. musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neuroscience and even EPA. With any luck, we’ll try to make it free for the student members *cross your fingers* Non-members will not be invited for such talks that cater only to SPA members.
Yadayadayada. Some of you might be thinking that this guy has been promoting ALOT on SPA student membership and leaving out the rest of the students. Don’t worry, we’ve got that covered! Currently, the student council is planning to bring back Andy from ASICS to talk about gait and footwear at the start of the year. For the year 1s, I’m sure that his lecture will be very helpful in letting you learn more about the lower limb. For the rest of the students, some of you might be hoping that he brings back his 40% ASICS discount voucher again. Sound familiar? 🙂
What about other talks? Honestly, I’m not sure what kind of talks we are going to get because we get different people approaching us every year. One thing is for sure, there will definitely be more talks regardless of whether you are an SPA member or not. So talks, talks and more talks, do look forward to the exciting year ahead!
